Respect Your Cat Day

There’s a very important pet holiday approaching. March 28th is Respect Your Cat Day! We believe that all kitties deserve to be treated with kindness, compassion, and respect. But how does one show a cat respect? As it turns out, it isn’t by building statues, like the Egyptians did, or offering Fluffy stocked fishponds or catnip gardens. Love, patience, and TLC will do the trick! A local Murrieta, CA vet offers some tips on respecting Fluffy in this article.

Avoid Punishment

Cats are playful, curious, and, well, a bit quirky. Sooner or later, Fluffy will do something that irks you. She may smack things off your counter, leave a hairball in the middle of the floor, or pounce on your toes as you’re sleeping. Never punish your frisky feline for these mishaps! Pets really don’t understand the concept of punishment. Your kitty is just going by instinct, so she won’t understand that she did something wrong. Focus on rewarding your furball for being good.

Provide Kitty Comforts

Our feline pals need more than food, shelter, water, and veterinary care to thrive. They also need entertainment and enrichment. Give your kitty lots of toys, and offer her some things that were made to suit her needs, like cat towers, scratching posts, and pet tents. Also, if you leave Fluffy alone while you go to work, turn a radio or TV on for her, so she has some background noise.

Avoid Kitty’s Pet Peeves

Cats have some very specific likes and dislikes. Fluffy loves being pampered, played with, and spoken to. She’s also found of catnip, comfy beds, boxes, and sunbeams. Her dislikes include things like loud noises, being cornered, and having attention forced on her. Pay attention to these things!

Clean The Litterbox

We don’t have to really explain this one. No one likes a dirty bathroom! Keep your furry buddy’s powder room nice and clean.

Pay Attention To Fluffy

We may like to joke about how our feline companions are weird and aloof, but at the end of the day, cats are really very emotional, and need to feel loved to truly be content. Pay lots of attention to Fluffy! Cuddles, lap time, and play sessions will all help keep that little motor going!
